Your Union Dues

As any other organization, unions need financial resources to conduct their affairs and pay for the activities described in this booklet.

Your union dues can be divided into two major components:

  • The portion kept by your local union to finance the operations and services provided by the local, and
  • The portion sent to the International Union to finance the services and assistance it provides to local unions.

The amount of dues payable each month to the local union is decided by the local union members.

IBEW local unions establish in their bylaws a prescribed amount of dues with a portion forwarded to the International Union consistent with the IBEW Constitution.

The many kinds of services which labor unions provide require financial resources. Some of these are:

  • Contract negotiations
  • Grievance and arbitration handling
  • Representing the interests of our members before the various levels of government
  • Organizing the unorganized
