Brothers and Sisters,

Local Union 99 has formed a Scholarship Committee. There are five members. The Officers include Recording Chairman Stephen Brady, Business Manager Michael Daley, President James Jackson, Daniel Angell and Christopher Capozzi.

The Committees’ task is easy, help members interested in attending a post-secondary school with some tuition relief. Of course in the beginning there’s not a lot of money. In fact currently only 1/3 of those working are participating members. Part of the reason for this is that they may have started working before the foundation was formed.

So we are asking all members to consider joining the Scholarship Program by making a charitable contribution for each hour worked.

Our goal is to have all members participating by next year and to open this program to them and their dependent children, but we need your help.

NOW!  If you’re currently a participating member and you are attending classes at the post- secondary level, stop by the office and pick up a scholarship application form.

We won’t be able to pay for the entire course but speaking from experience, every little bit helps.

So let’s make sure when you get your referral, you sign the Scholarship portion of your form. Contribution forms and eligibility forms are available at the business office.

Members participating in ILSR / CCRI classes should fill out application forms for reimbursement.

If you are Unemployed, you could possibly be eligible to take college classes for free. Check with the Bursars office of the college for more information.

First:  On the day of application all applicants will need a valid driver’s license, a High School diploma or have a GED.  You will need a passing grade of “C” or “70” in Algebra 1.  You will have thirty days to supply a copy of your birth certificate and a High School transcript.

Second:  Applicants will take an exam that meets a national standard; the exam is 50% reading comprehension and 50% mathematics (including Algebra).  When an applicant receives a passing grade they will be granted an interview.  An applicant’s score on the interview will determine if they are accepted into the Apprenticeship program.

The apprenticeship program is a 5 year program; as long as you meet all the requirements of the Apprenticeship Agreement, you will be granted a full tuition scholarship that is paid by the Apprenticeship Trust Fund. However, the Apprentice will be responsible to purchase books, maintain acceptable grades and attend all classes; the program runs from September to May each year, typically two nights a week.

Applying and Qualifying for Apprenticeship in the Electrical Industry

The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW 99) jointly sponsor an electrical apprenticeship training program that could potentially offer you the opportunity to earn wages, benefits and a college degree while you learn the skills needed for a trade that can be both challenging and rewarding. You will have the chance to use your mind, as well as your physical skills, to complete work in a variety of settings with the constant opportunity to learn something new.
